Is membership in the Omaha Bar Association (OBA) mandatory for attorneys practicing in Omaha?
Membership in the Omaha Bar Association is voluntary. Nevertheless, a significant majority of attorneys in the Omaha metro area maintain membership in the OBA.
What are the requirements for membership in the OBA?
Attorneys must have a license to practice law in at least one state and pay membership dues. Third and second year law students are also able to become members.
How much are membership dues and when do I pay them?
Membership dues amounts vary, depending on the member's status in the profession. Dues for attorneys in practice for 1 to 4 years are $80 per year, dues for attorneys in practice for 5 or more years are $165 per year, dues for law students and judges are waived, and dues for inactive or retired attorneys and attorneys in practice more than 50 years are $82.50 per year.
I'm a transactional attorney and am concerned of bar associations being dominated by litigators and courtroom practitioners. Is that the case with the OBA?
The OBA is welcoming of all attorneys and practice areas, and this concern from transactional attorneys is a common misconception. In fact, some of the most involved OBA members are themselves transactional attorneys!
